The Shade at My Right Hand (Psalm 121)

“The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.”
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭121‬:‭5‬-‭6‬ ‭ESV‬‬

As I write this, I’m on a cruise. It is a beautiful day. For most of today, my wife and I have been on the top deck, stretched out on lounge chairs with a book and a Coke Zero. It has been heavenly. The ocean stretched out to the horizon, sunlight spilling gold across the waves.

There is something intoxicating about being at sea, even if you don’t get the adult beverage package. It’s the warmth on your skin, the brilliance of the sky, the sense that the whole world is open and endless.

But after a while, the heat starts pressing in. The joy of the sun becomes the weight of it. And suddenly, shade isn’t just pleasant—it’s necessary.

This ship was designed with that in mind. The upper decks are lined with awnings and shelters, little sanctuaries of coolness. Without them, the decks would empty quickly. The heat would drive us inside. But because there’s shade, people linger. They laugh. They rest. They stay.

And that’s what Psalm 121 whispers to us: God Himself is our shade.

The psalm is a pilgrim song, written for travelers walking toward Jerusalem under the relentless Middle Eastern sun. It begins with a question:

“I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from?”

The answer comes quickly:

“My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

The God who sculpted mountains and oceans does more than create beauty; He keeps us. He guards our steps. He knows the weight of life’s heat—the exhaustion, the anxiety, the relentless push of expectations and demands. And just when the journey feels unbearable, He offers shade.

Not escape. Not an air-conditioned cabin to hide in. Shade. The promise isn’t that the sun will stop shining—it’s that it won’t destroy you. God positions Himself close enough, near enough, steady enough, that His presence keeps you from burning out completely.

And just like these cruise decks, life with God means we can stay. We can linger. We can breathe again.

So today, with the ocean breeze at my face and the sun high overhead, I thought about the quiet promise of Psalm 121:

The Lord is my keeper. The Lord is my shade.

Maybe that’s what you need today, too—not a new horizon, but a resting place in the One who keeps you. The sun may be blazing, but His presence is near.
